Feasibility Study for Sub-Transmission HV Lines and Distribution Substations for Rural Electrification financed by EDF though NAO in Tanzania: the site survey has taken off !
The United Republic of Tanzania is one of the largest countries in East Africa with an estimated population of ⁓56 million. Even though the rural population accounts for some 80% of the population, while facing extremely low rates of access to electricity for rural households (less than 50%), the Government of Tanzania is determined to achieve the following goals:
- to provide sustainable access to electricity through construction of electricity infrastructures for rural electrification in order to increase social and economic development of populations in beneficiary areas
- to electrify 7,873 villages that today have no electricity by year 2021
- to increase its share of renewable energy in the generation mix by 50% by 2030
These strategic goals are overall objectives of the project of which the studies awarded to Studio Pietrangeli (Italy) in 2019 are part. The beneficiary is the Government, more specifically:
- TANESCO the Tanzania Electricity Supply Company Ltd
- REA the Rural Energy Agency
- EWURA the Energy, and Water Utilities Regulatory Agency
- NEMC the National Environment Management Council
The European Development Fund (EDF) finances the project through the National Authorising Officer at the Ministry of Finance and Planning. The engineering assignment undertaken by Studio Pietrangeli (Italy) comprises almost 2’000 km of high voltage lines and approx. 50 sub-transmission and distribution electric substations, between those newly conceived and extended or enlarged.
